At the Hollies & Holly Oak Care Centres: Covid-19

We at the Hollies/ Holly Oak continue to be pro-active and take thorough measures to ensure the health and safety of residents and their families and friends.

Here, we answer some commonly asked questions:

Are the Hollies/ Holly Oak admitting new residents?

Yes! We are admitting new residents subject to a pre-admission assessment by one of our registered nurses. Any new resident must show a negative Lateral Flow Test on the day of admission.

We continue to seek advice from Public Health England to act in the best interest of residents, carers, staff, families and friends.

How can I be sure that the Hollies/ Holly Oak is a safe place for my relative?

  • We are proactive in following government and PHE advice and guidelines, and we rigorously undertake Covid-19 tests with staff and residents.
  • The Hollies/ Holly Oak has access to the Rapid Response team and an excellent relationship with local GP’s.
  • The Hollies/ Holly Oak prides itself in on-going staff training.
  • The Hollies/ Holly Oak provides a staff incentive to cover extra shifts – hence we never use agency staff!
  • The Hollies/ Holly Oak are modern purpose-built buildings with excellent facilities.
  • We have plenty of safe outdoor areas with a roof garden, summer house and areas to walk and admire the views.

Can we visit our loved one?

As from the 31 January 2022 Opening Visiting Pending any Covid outbreaks and guidance from PHE

Yes, family can visit. Fabulous newly designed visiting areas have been established to provide a safe and compliant space for residents to see their loved ones. We are lucky as the Hollies/ Holly Oak are located within a lovely park with expansive grounds. Our visiting arrangements have been extremely well enjoyed and appreciated by residents and families.

All visitors are asked also to visit in the residents’ rooms and only in communal areas, if arranged with staff and well ventilated.

All visitors must show on entry to the homes for visits a negative Lateral Flow Test (dated the day of the visit). Tests should preferably be registered online.

We ask that all visitors continue always wearing a mask during the visit, which can be supplied. Visitors no longer required to wear an apron and gloves, but we ask that the hand washing stations are used prior to entry to the homes.

What additional steps has The Hollies taken?

  • Rigorous staff training of infection control procedures including donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
  • Thermal imaging system is in place at both the Hollies/ Holly Oak to monitor temperature;
  • External hand washing stations outside each care home were built by our maintenance team;
  • Staffing levels have been reviewed and initiatives put in place to mitigate against increased staff sickness.

01 June 2022

Dear Families & Friends

Following advice received today regarding the testing of care home visitors, we are very pleased to announce that there will now be no requirement for visitors to routinely self-test prior to visiting The Hollies and Holly Oak.

We would ask you to continue to self-test if you are experiencing any symptoms of Covid and follow the relevant government advice if you test positive.
We would also ask that you continue to wear masks whilst in any communal areas of the home but they can be removed whilst in resident rooms.

Staff will continue to test two to three times a week and will be wearing masks as required.

Please note, that the lifting of restrictions is subject to revision if government policy changes again in the future. We request that if you are experiencing Covid symptoms, that you refrain from visiting.

May we take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and understanding during this difficult time as we have endeavoured to keep your loved ones safe.

Here’s to a brighter future!

Best wishes,
Jo, Duncan & Jonathan

29 April 2022

Dear Families & Friends

We are happy to announce that the Hollies Care Centre and Holly Oak Dementia Care Home are now open!
All visitors need to remain in the residents’ rooms and visiting in communal areas is at staffs’ discretion for the safety of all.

You must use the hand washing station prior to entry and show a negative LFT test that must have been taken that morning. Staff will then document the evidence on our covid testing list in the foyer.

Facial masks must be worn correctly over the nose and you no longer need to wear gloves or aprons unless instructed.

We are allowing visitors to take their loved ones out now but please adhere to covid safety issues and infection control as covid is still very much in the community as you are aware. We would advise not to go into huge public venues at this moment in time.

Covid spring booster vaccinations are now due for those who have not had covid previously. Some of our residents have now had them in the Hollies.

Holly Oak are aiming to have the covid spring boosters done on the 4th May by the doctor.

It is anticipated that residents who have had covid previously, will have their boosters after 90 days of being negative.

I want to thank everybody at this time for their understanding and support. This has been a difficult time for us all but we have got through it with the assistance of Public Health England and Gloucestershire Infection Control Nurse.

Thank you so much.

Best wishes,

Jo, Duncan and Jonathan.

13 April 2022

Dear Families & Friends

I appreciate that you share our exasperation with the closure of both homes yet again to visitors over the past few weeks.  Despite the messages in the media about “getting on with life” and “learning to live with Covid”, as a responsible Care Home we cannot simply throw caution to the wind, and when faced with an outbreak we had no other option other than to close the doors for the protection of residents staff and visitors, not to mention compliance with instructions for PHE.

However, I am now delighted to confirm that Holly Oak will re-open on Easter Sunday (17th) and The Hollies shortly after on Thursday 21st.  Moving forward from these dates we are asking you all to support us by observing some sensible precautions:

  • Visiting limited to 2 people at a time (3 at a stretch by agreement with RM / HOC)
  • Visiting between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. confined to your loved one’s room, or outdoors if the weather is kind
  • LFT tests taken on the day of the visit to be shown prior to entry (and, I am afraid, at your own expense going forward)
  • Masks to be worn correctly whilst in the home
  • If you have the slightest sign of any Covid symptoms, or any other infectious illness please stay well away until you are completely recovered

We are still cautiously optimistic about the future. We have noticed that most of our residents and staff testing positive have been either asymptomatic, or only mildly poorly, so let’s just hope that we are finally seeing the end of this horrible pandemic.

As always, thank you for your patient and loyal support during these difficult times, and very best wishes for a happy and peaceful Easter.

Best wishes,

Jo, Duncan and Jonathan.

3rd February 2022

Dear Family and Friends

Following the recent press coverage and the new government guidelines, we want to update you regarding how we at the Hollies and Holly Oak are adapting to the latest circumstances.

With immediate effect visiting is now open and residents do not require to nominate three/four designated visitors. We ask that all visitors undertake a lateral flow test, prior to visiting and to register these with the NHS app, and to provide evidence of this to a member of our staff prior to admission.  The flow test must be undertaken the morning of the visit and must be within twenty-four hours of the visit. We must insist that the flow test results are brought in with you.

If you are unable to undertake a flow test, we will assist you with a test prior to entry to the building and in such circumstances, you should allow extra time for this to be undertaken.

Please make sure that the hand washing facilities are used prior to entry and on exit, and that you wash thoroughly. Protective masks should continue to be worn on entry to the care homes. We no longer require you to wear apron and gloves.

We are adhering to local and national government guidelines, CQC information and public health England. These guidelines may be subject to change, and we are continuing to monitor rules and guidance though our normal contacts.

Thank you all for your support and understanding. Our aim, as always, is that everyone is safe.

Spring is on its way and hopefully some beautiful sunny days.

Relatives are able to take their loved ones out on outings, but we ask that guidelines are followed for the safety of all.

All the staff at the Hollies and Holly Oak

13th December 2021

Dear Family and Friends

Following the recent press coverage and the new government guidelines, we want to update you regarding how we at The Hollies and Holly Oak are adapting to the latest circumstances.

With immediate effect all residents will be able to nominate three designated visitors / family members, who may visit them in the care homes. This number maybe increased to four in certain circumstances (please contact us to discuss this if required).

Visiting will continue as normal, but we ask that all visitors undertake a lateral flow test, prior to visiting and to register these with the NHS app, and to provide evidence of this to a member of our staff prior to admission.

Protective aprons, masks and gloves should continue to be worn on entry to the care homes.

We want this to be a happy joyful Christmas and New Year for all. So, if a resident is going home for the day with their designated relatives, we please ask that you undertake lateral flow tests prior to collecting your relative and to protect them when they are in your homes.

We are adhering to local and national government guidelines, CQC information and public health England. These guidelines may be subject to change, and we are continuing to monitor rules and guidance though our normal contacts.

Further information regarding lunches and visiting over the festive season will follow. Existing meal bookings will be honoured, with visitors being expected to follow guidelines and social distancing rules, subject to any changes in the future made by the government.  We are continuing to take bookings for Christmas Day, Boxing and New Year’s Day subject to limitations on visitor numbers.  Please call Alison or Nicole on 01453541400 for further details including menus and prices. You can also find out more on our website – https://thehollies.co.uk/special-occasions/

Thank you all for your support and understanding. Our aim, as always, is that everyone enjoys a fantastic Christmas and New Year and are safe.

Happy Christmas and New Year

18th August 2021

Dear all Families & Friends

It’s the middle of August and along with the rest of the country, The Hollies and Holly Oak teams would like to make more visiting opportunities available to friends and family members whilst keeping safety a high priority.

Therefore, from 19th September 2021, appointments to visit residents will no longer be necessary!

When planning your visits, we do ask you to avoid busy times of the day, for example first thing in the morning, when residents are getting up and having breakfast etc.

To minimise the on-going risk of infection we politely ask you to comply with the following:

  • All visitors to have provided proof of double vaccinations for Covid-19
  • Lateral Flow Tests (LFT’s) to be completed at home prior to visits (These can be obtained from The Hollies/ Holly Oak or from your local pharmacy free of charge)
  • Hand washing on arrival and departure
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be worn during visits (that is masks, gloves and aprons all available from The Hollies/ Holly Oak)
  • Visits are limited to resident’s rooms or outside spaces and not communal areas

On Sundays, starting from Sunday 5th September 2021, there will be opportunities to take residents home for family visits. Again, to minimise risk we ask you to comply with the following:

  • All present at home visits should have produced proof of double Covid-19 vaccinations and negative LFT’s prior to visits
  • Home visits should comprise of visiting the family home without stopping at a local café or for a shopping trip. (Apologies but this is where there is the greatest risk of infection)
  • Hand washing and ventilation ie open windows during the visit are essential

Please note:

If there are two or more confirmed cases of Covid-19 amongst residents or staff the managers of The Hollies and Holly Oak will follow government guidelines and close one or both homes for ten days.

Thank you all for your continued support.

The Hollies and Holly Oak Care Teams

16th July 2021

Dear all Families & Friends

We do hope that you are all keeping well and enjoying the sunshine!

As we approach ‘Freedom Day’ on Monday 19th July we would like to thank you all for your continued support over the last challenging sixteen months and outline our proposed next steps.

From Monday both the Hollies and Holly Oak will be welcoming visitors to see loved ones with no limit on numbers!

However, as with all Care Homes we are awaiting further guidelines from the Government and therefore in the interim booked appointments and wearing of PPE will continue. We have set out some bullet points below:

All visits need to be prebooked with Nicole nicole@thehollies.co.uk for Holly Oak and with Sherry sherry@thehollies.co.uk for The Hollies (this is so that we can monitor numbers of people on both sites)

If you would like to visit a resident in their room you will still need to have a Lateral Flow Test (LFT), this can be done with a free test at home obtained from your local pharmacy. Take a photograph on your ‘phone and show it to us on arrival or take a test on site and wait for 30 minutes before visiting.

You do not need to take an LFT if you wish to visit in one of the ‘pods’

Face masks need to be worn for pod and LFT visits

Whilst the weather is so glorious you may want to book an outside visit with your friend or relative – you do not need to take an LFT or wear a mask and this may be more conducive if the resident has issues with hearing or cognition. (If you would like an outside visit, please advise us on booking and we will make sure the resident is suitably prepared ie sun hats, sun cream etc.)

As before if your family member or friend is poorly, we will endeavour to make special arrangements for visits.

As described, we are still awaiting new Government guidelines to support these changes and therefore the above may be subject to change, but we will let you know as soon as we know! If you have any questions please ask Nicole or Sherry.

Once again thank you for all your help and support in our joint endeavours to keep everyone safe!

The Hollies and Holly Oak Care teams

27th May 2021

Dear all Families & Friends

We are happy to announce that the Hollies Care Centre continue to welcome family for visits to both the Hollies and Holly Oak!

We continue to be pro-active and take precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of the residents, their families and friends.

There has been a recent change to guidelines for visiting in care homes and residents are now able to name five specific individuals who will be able to visit.

This means that residents will be able to look forward to seeing a variety of family again! The Hollies and Holly Oak will be putting this in place but we do want to stress that only two designated visitors out of the nominated five, can attend a pod visit or LFT visit at a time.

Please contact sherry at sherry@thehollies.co.uk for all appointments concerning visits for the Hollies.

Please contact Nicole at nicole@thehollies.co.uk for all appointments concerning visits for Holly Oak.

Thank you so much for your understanding. Please all keep safe and well.

We hope in June further guidelines will be made available.

Please keep safe and well

6th May 2021

Dear all Families & Friends

Let’s hope this sunny weather stays and brings with it the warmth of summer so that we can enjoy the outside.

At the Hollies and Holly Oak we continue to abide by government guidelines concerning Pod visits and Internal visits after an LFD test in our new Summer House.

The government recently released advice that residents can go home to sit/ be in the garden with their nominated visitor only.

Due to the cooler weather we have decided to continue with visiting at the Hollies and Holly Oak and social distancing remains extremely importance. We have our beautiful new Summer House and Apartments for visiting and the resident’s private room after a LFD test. As the weather warms up we will look towards other visiting options.

Please continue to contact us for visiting appointments. Please contact sherry@thehollies.co.uk for the Hollies and nicole@thehollies.co.uk for Holly Oak.

Thank you again for all your support, good wishes and kind thoughts.

I would also like to mention, welcome and congratulate our two new members of staff – Head of Care for the Hollies Days and Head of Care for Holly Oak Days.

Please keep safe and well

The Hollies and Holly Oak Care teams

7th April 2021

Dear all Families & Friends

We hope you all had a good Easter despite it being a bit chilly!

Unfortunately, we have had to temporarily close The Hollies and Holly Oak to visitors until the end of the week and possibly into next week.

This is purely a precautionary measure as a result of some inconsistent test results which we hope to have resolved as soon as possible. We will of course let you know when visiting can safely resume.

Naturally, the health and well being of our residents is a priority and we thank you for your understanding at this time.

If you have any queries or questions do ‘phone or email valerie@thehollies.co.uk

Calls can still be arranged via social media please contact activities@thehollies.co.uk

Any deliveries/ gifts for residents please leave in the delivery box and ring the bell for reception

Please keep safe and well

The Hollies and Holly Oak Care teams

4th March 2021

Dear Family and Friends

The sun is shining and the Hollies are embracing the new government announcement that one designated family member be allowed to enter the home after having tested negative for Covid 19 using the Lateral Flow Test (LFT)

  • The Lateral Flow Test (LFT) is similar to the regular test for Covid ie swabbing the back of the mouth and nose; the results are available after 30 minutes but unfortunately are not so reliable.
  • The LFT visits will start on Tuesday 9th March and Thursday 11th March and thereafter on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All internal visitors need to arrive 30 minutes before their visit to allow for testing; first visitors to be tested at 13.30 and last at 16.00.
  • Pod visits in the apartments/ summerhouse will continue to take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday without testing as some residents and families would like these to continue
  • We will be alternating ‘pod’ visit days with LFT visit days to avoid confusion with organisation and administration of the visiting programme
  • Appointments for all LFT visits and pod visits need to be made in advance
  • For LFT visits the designated visitor comes to the summerhouse or gazebo (for Holly Oak) here they sign in and record their temperature. The LFT is performed and the visitor returns to their car for 25 minutes. They then return to the testing area.
  • If the test is negative the visitor puts on a clean mask, apron and gloves and accompanies the nurse to the nearest access to their relative’s room.
  • The visit lasts for 30 minutes, they may hold hands but cannot kiss, cuddle or hug each other
  • After 30 minutes the visitor then leaves using the same exit as on entry and signs out in the summerhouse/ gazebo
  • If the visitor tests positive for Covid 19, the result is registered, a normal test is performed and advice given to the visitor to self-isolate
  • If the result is invalid or inconclusive one further test is offered, if this test is invalid the visitor will be asked to return another day
  • Timing for all visits is crucial to allow as many residents as possible to visit their family members

Points to note:

  • All visitors are reminded NOT to visit if they have felt unwell or have been in contact with anyone who has felt unwell in the last 10 days
  • All visits remain by appointment only
  • All visitors are reminded to wash their hands/ use hand sanitiser before coming into the Hollies/ Holly Oak and on exit
  • Clean PPE will be provided; masks, gloves and aprons must be worn throughout the visit
  • The one designated visitor for LFT visits should be decided by the resident in the first instance but with family support/ guidance
  • For LFT visits all coats and handbags must be left in cars – gifts are still allowed but must be marked and quarantined.
  • No LFT visits can be arranged at weekends due to administrative implications
  • Apologies for all the instructions and regulations, it is our aim to arrange as many visits as possible whilst keeping our residents, their visitors and our staff as safe as possible
  • As always if you would like to arrange a visit using the testing or ‘pod’ visiting scheme please email valerie@thehollies.co.uk or ring The Hollies and speak to Valerie or Chloe
  • The health, welfare and safety of our residents remains paramount, if for any reason visits are suspended this decision will be made by the Registered Managers of The Hollies and Holly Oak

2nd February 2021

Dear Families and Friends

Good afternoon to all.

We certainly know that it is February – cold and chilly! Thank goodness we are all keeping positive and sunny at the Hollies and the recently opened new Holly Oak!

All staff and residents have now had at least one Covid vaccination and should be getting the second dose later in the month!

Despite ‘lockdown 3’ Government Guidelines indicate that visits to care homes can continue if we continue to comply with regulations. To this end we are asking visitors to book appointments for visits (valerie@thehollies.co.uk) and to attend only if they are feeling well and have not been in contact with anyone who is feeling unwell for the last ten days. Masks and hand sanitiser must be used.

Our new visitor’s pod (the Summerhouse) is nice and cosy with a Perspex divider to comply with regulations.

We have also allocated a room (pod) for visits at Holly Oak – this has an internal door for residents and an external door for visitors – both pods are cleaned thoroughly between visits.

Family members who cannot visit due to travel restrictions or self-isolation are encouraged to make contact by telephone or by using social media (activities@thehollies.co.uk)

Indeed, if you have any questions or queries about visiting or the care and wellbeing of your family member or friend do get in touch – we are here to help!

Keep safe!

15th December 2020

Dear Families and Friends

I am very pleased to announce that we have no further positive Covid tests amongst our residents. This is due to the further refinement of our robust infection control measures and the vigilant commitment of all our amazing staff.

We are now required to wait for the most recent positive residents to clear the Public Health England (PHE) time requirements and then the whole home will once again be officially Covid-19 free.

We are continuing with our weekly testing of staff and residents, and we were very fortunate to have been selected for the first round of Covid vaccinations for our staff,   and all 100 plus staff should be fully vaccinated very soon.

Stocks of Lateral Flow Test kits (LFT) have now been delivered and clinical staff have received training on this system. LFT will give greater flexibility in how we structure visits for families and friends, although some restrictions will need to remain in place to meet Government requirements and to ensure the safety of our residents staff and visitors. We expect that the LFT will come into use at The Hollies in the new year, by which time we will be officially Covid-19 clear.

We have also completed a new visitor pod in the grounds which will allow more visits in comfortable surroundings. Once we return to normality the visitor’s pod will become a lovely summer house and quiet garden area which may be enjoyed by residents and families alike.

We are awaiting news on the roll out of Covid 19 vaccination for our residents which will,  hopefully, be very soon. Many of you have already kindly returned your consent forms so we are in a good position to progress rapidly when the opportunity arises.

Valerie will contact you in relation to visits for your loved ones in due course. If you have any questions or queries regarding, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for you continued support and the lovely well-wishing messages and may I wish you and your families a safe and peaceful Christmas.

30th November 2020

Dear Families and Friends

At last a little bit of good news!

Since our last update we have been experiencing a series of residents and staff members who have tested positive for Covid-19. Obviously this has been a worrying time for you as you have been unable to visit your loved ones, via the apartment, to check on their progress and worrying for us as we have been carefully monitoring residents and covering for colleagues who have had to self-isolate.

We have been following the advice given by Public Health England (PHE) and informing them of our progress – to date they have approved of all the steps we have taken to protect our residents and staff. PHE have implemented a Red/ Amber/ Green system to monitor the infection in care homes. We are delighted to share with you that residents living on the ground floor are now all ‘Green’ – that is the residents who tested positive 34 days ago are all symptom free and doing well. In light of this news those residents who wish to can now come out of their rooms for meals. We are also going to start visits for ground floor residents only, in the apartment (visiting ‘pod’).

Whilst a large number of residents have tested positive over the last few weeks we have sadly, had a few deaths, our hearts go out to those relatives. Our residents have had a high standard of nursing care, good food and extra vigilance and attention during these testing times.

Close monitoring of residents on the middle and top floors continues and we are continuing to test all residents and staff who are negative on a weekly basis.

Valerie will contact you in relation to visits for residents on the ground floor. If you have any questions or queries regarding residents, please do not hesitate to contact us.

As always, keep safe!

30 October 2020

Dear Families and Friends

Further to our latest news update, we are currently experiencing an epidemic of Covid 19. Those residents who are affected have been ‘cohorted’ an expression coined by Public Health England (PHE) meaning that they are being segregated from the other residents. PHE are happy with all the measures that we have taken to date and indeed think we are coping very well. Today all resident’s next of kin have been contacted informing them whether or not they have been tested positive or negative. Obviously we are taking advice from PHE and our GP’s as well. If you have any queries or concerns please do contact us but do bear in mind that we are experiencing high volumes of telephone calls at the moment.

We will be repeating testing of all residents and staff weekly for the next three weeks and will of course keep you updated if there are any changes.

Thank you for all your support and kind words.

Keep safe!

Dear Families and Friends

Unfortunately we need to report that two of our residents have tested positive for Covid-19. All residents were due to be tested on Friday but along with the staff testing they have all been tested again today. As an extra precaution all residents are having their observations taken today. The two residents are now in isolation in our ‘isolation unit’ with no access to other residents. In accordance with government guidelines, the two residents are being cared for by nurses and carers wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) following strict infection control guidelines.

Obviously this is very disappointing to report but we are all remaining positive keeping your relatives and friends positive as well. All staff and residents are keeping to their ‘floors’ as much as possible. Activities staff have been allocated to each floor to provide this afternoon’s entertainment – so we are really trying hard to keep things ‘as normal as can be’.

Our best wishes to you all – keep safe!

Pod visits

Dear Families and Friends

With the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases across the county Public Health England (PHE) have advised all care homes to suspend visiting.

This is a huge disappointment for us all especially as it was only last week that we communicated that we would be starting visits again. Unfortunately we now have to revert back to ‘closed for visitation’.

PHE and Gloucestershire Care Home support have advised that this decision will be reviewed in a month’s time.

We will of course keep you updated and please do keep in contact by telephone, FaceTime or any other type of social media which is most effective for you and your loved one. If you need any help please ask!

Best wishes from us all at the Hollies and keep safe…

Pod visits

Dear Families and Friends

I am happy to inform you that Pod visits will recommence from Monday 19th October, subject to the following conditions.

Unfortunately, Government figures show an increase of 48% for people testing positive to Covid 19 in the local area within the last week.

Following PHE (Public Health England) advice, we now must limit visits to one nominated individual per family, this individual will need to remain the same throughout all visits until the advice from PHE changes.

All visits by the nominated individual must be arranged in advance and strict social distancing measures must be maintained throughout the visit.  Visits will continue to be supervised but we will aim to do this in a sensitive and unobtrusive manner.

To arrange a Pod visit please contact valerie@thehollies.co.uk

Please note, we will be unable to accommodate any visits that have not been pre-arranged.

All recent tests of both staff and residents have come back negative, which is a great demonstration of the ongoing dedication and vigilance of the entire Hollies team.

Please also note that these arrangements are subject to change at short notice should PHE and Government advice alter.

On a positive note, we are in the process of constructing a new purpose built garden room with lighting and heating to facilitate improved social distanced visits in the future.

Thank you all for your continued understanding as we endeavour to keep your loved ones safe.

Take care.

Pod visits

Dear Families and Friends

Following our recent closure of pod visits I want to update you with further information.

The pod visits were discontinued after two staff tested positive for Covid 19 during weekly staff testing, PHE (Public Health England) believe that these infections were acquired in the community, as whole home testing identified no further cases amongst staff or residents. The staff concerned were asymptomatic.

The latest Government figures show an 11% increase in the local area within the past seven days.

It remains our duty of care to protect all staff and residents from what is potentially a life threatening virus, so once again, following Government Guidelines and advice from PHE (Public Health England) the decision has been made to extend the closure of pod visits at The Hollies for a further 10 days

This will allow us to undertake testing of all staff and residents during the coming week.

Once the results are received and we have gained a clearer picture of how the virus is spreading within the local community, we will then be in a better position to make informed decisions regarding pod visits.

I fully realise that this news will be the cause of great disappointment to many of you. but it is taken with the very best interests of both residents and staff

When we reinstate the pod visits, it will be by appointment only, on a rolling programme, as we were doing previously.  Valerie will take details and bookings for certain days and times.

Thank you all for your understanding.

We want to protect your loved ones.

Keep safe all of you.

Pod visits

Dear Families and Friends

With our recent closure of pods visits I want to update you with further information.

The pod visits were discontinued after positive covid 19 tests were recognised in very close proximity to the Hollies resulting in two staff after weekly testing showing positive results without any symptoms. It is our duty of care to protect all, and following government guidelines and infection control information from public health the decision to close the Hollies for two weeks regarding pod visits had to be made.

All staff and residents have now been tested and the first weeks’ results were negative for all. We are now awaiting this weeks’ results for staff.

Full infection control protocol and the wearing of PPE continues to be undertaken. We will be reviewing the pod visits, possibly reinstating them after Monday 5th October. Local guidelines in Gloucestershire are being monitored daily and this could change with the increase in positive test results and new isolation and meeting regulations from the government.

When we reinstate the pod visits, it will be by appointment only, on a rolling programme, as we were doing previously.  Valerie will take details and bookings for certain days and times.

Thank you all for your understanding and lovely emails.

We want to protect your loved ones.

Keep safe all of you.

Pod visits

Dear Families and Friends

I hope you are keeping well and safe in these troubling times.

Unfortunately due to the increase of cases in the local area, we have made the tough decision to stop the pod visits with immediate effect.

We are still continuing our testing, weekly for staff and monthly for residents (which will be tomorrow 11.9.2020).

We are following the strict government guidelines to keep all residents safe, yourselves safe and all of the staff.

We will review this on the 28th September and will keep you all updated.

Open to new residents and family visits by appointment

Dear Families and Friends

I hope everyone enjoyed the bank holiday weekend and was able to get out and about.

Today we have tested all the staff again for covid-19. We will continue to test weekly and monthly with residents.

Residents are enjoying a roast lunch today and Activities have planned singing and dancing for this afternoon.

Whilst the Hollies remains closed for ‘open visiting’, we are pleased to advise that we are offering appointments for new placement enquiries, family visits and new staff appointments. These are all subject to Government guidelines with scrupulous attention to Covid-19 testing and assessment by our registered nurses; all appointments are made using our bespoke visitor pod facility.

If you would like any further information or to view with regards to a new placement for a friend or family member please contact Jo Walters.

20 August 2020

Closure until further notice

Dear family and friends

Can you believe that it is nearly the end of August and we are still in the throes of this pandemic?

Here at the Hollies we are still practising all our infection control measures, policies and procedures to keep all microbes at bay. We are coming up to the season for ‘flu vaccines and encouraging all residents and staff to participate in the scheme to keep us all safe from that particular set of viruses.

We were all thrilled that the latest testing for Covid-19 came back 100% negative – yes, a huge endorsement for all our hard work but no reason to rest on our laurels! We are now recruiting new staff and taking new residents but only after scrupulous testing and assessment.

The team are working hard to keep residents entertained. On Tuesday we had a treat – cheese and wine tasting along with bunting and French bistro style music. The residents really enjoyed it – thank you to the activities team!

The visiting scheme in the new apartment continues to be successful – thank you to you all for participating and bearing with us and thank you to Jonathan for letting us use such a fabulous setting for the visits. They certainly make our residents feel comfortable and at ease – let’s hope Jonathan doesn’t sell it too quickly! Only kidding!!

Congratulations to Senior Carer, Vicky, and her husband Owen on the birth of healthy twin boys – another set of twins at the Hollies – must be something in the water!

Best wishes to you all and keep safe

31st July 2020

Closure until further notice

To all our families and friends,

A quick update on how things are progressing at the Hollies:

We are continuing to offer supported visits by an appointment only system. These are going very well and we are currently being able to offer visits for each resident on a roughly monthly basis. We understand that some family members are now back at work so please do let us know your availability when you are contacted. These visits comply with current government guidelines on visiting in care homes and therefore we are going to continue with this arrangement for the moment.

As you have probably read in the media more frequent testing of staff and residents is being offered, we have applied for these tests and will let you know when this programme starts and of course any results.

The residents and staff are all well and we are continuing with our policy of infection control measures including extra cleaning, regular observations of staff and residents to ensure a heightened level of awareness around Covid-19.

As always do contact us if you have any concerns or queries concerning your family member.

With best wishes,

03rd July 2020

Closure until further notice

To all our families and friends,

With the lockdown easing this weekend in the local community, I would like to advise however, that the Hollies will remain closed to all visitors at this time. We are constantly reviewing the situation and maintain a strong set of risk adverse policies.

This easing of isolation and consequent increased movement within the local community requires constant surveillance so that we can keep your loved ones safe along with staff and yourselves.

We are continuing our popular appointment visits organised by Valerie. These visits have been a great success and thank you all for making the most of the visits and being so understanding. We are now in the process of repeat visits.

The residents have been very busy over the last few days, enjoying the activities, walks in the grounds and of course the delicious food.

Thank you again everyone for your hard work and understanding during this time.

We will re address the situation once we have monitored the results and implications of the eased lockdown in the community. We absolutely do not want the infection rate to increase.

Be safe every one

Closure until further notice

To all our families and friends,

We enjoyed another five invited family/ friend members yesterday. It has been so well received for all of us that we thought we would share some of the stories, without names of course.

Resident A was a little upset at first, but quickly was engaged in conversation. She was very happy to see her family and said she was “gobsmacked with the day’s visit”. She enjoyed the visit very much.

Resident B was a little teary when he knew his daughter was coming but when the moment came he was very engaged and asked about family members. The family were very pleased to be afforded the time with their father.

Resident C was very excited to see her son and was very engaged, interested in what her family was doing during the lockdown. She was asking about other family members not wasting a minute of time. It was a lovely visit and she and the family really enjoyed it.

We trust the invited visits will continue. And finally, please be assured we are following all government and safety regulations and guidelines throughout.

Closure until further notice

Dear Families and Friends,

We wanted to update you on the Hollies visiting scheme which so far is going very well. To date we have facilitated 24 visits with another 10 booked for next week. If you have not been contacted yet, please do not worry, you are on the list and will be contacted shortly. We understand that due to personal reasons some of you are unable to visit in person and are happy to maintain contact in other ways but our aim is to contact every resident’s next of kin and offer an appointment to visit. A person to person visit is so reassuring for many of our resident’s especially those who due to health issues are unable to engage with alternate communication methods, despite our best efforts.

Each visit has been memorable; there have been tears, there has been laughter, stories of family and friends with a unique love that only families share. For the staff involved it has been a privilege to share these visits with you.

We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all involved in facilitating these visits, but especially to our residents and you, the visiting family and friends. You have all made a huge effort to comply with our rules to try and make these visits an enjoyable experience whilst maintaining safety for all concerned.

One of the key indicators that this scheme has worked has not only been smiles on the faces of all involved, but the requests for further visits by both residents and visitors. As soon as we have offered visits to all our residents’ families we will be renewing offers of further visits – thank you for your patience and understanding.

Be kind and stay safe

The Hollies team

  1. For some residents we have been communicating the news of the forthcoming visit on the day of the visit to avoid additional confusion and anxiety. We have gained permission from one of our residents to share this story with you:

We told Resident B that we had some good news for her – she immediately thought that her new catheter bags had arrived, as due to problems with supplies they had been out of stock for some weeks. When we told her that her daughter was visiting that afternoon, she burst into ‘happy’ tears!!

12th June 2020

Closure until further notice

To all our families and friends,

Another week has gone by and I wanted to wish you all a lovely weekend. Hope the rain stays away!

At the Hollies our vegetable garden is coming along nicely, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, lettuce and runner beans growing well.

The residents along with the Activities team, have been filling the back garden and boarders with plants and we have some lovely pots full of flowers outside the main reception door.

We had a birthday celebration this week for one of the resident’s and again a beautiful birthday cake was provided by the Hospitality team.

The hair salon has been working over time today. Trish and Sherry are calling the salon the ‘hair boudoir’.

Invited visits have been going very well this week. Val organised a further eight residents to see their families for a short time within government guidelines and social distancing. Please bear with us, Val will contact you for your invite. It has been lovely seeing the residents’ faces when they return from their visit, smiling and happy to have seen their son, daughter or close relative. The same goes for the relatives smiling faces.

Thank you again and again for your understanding.

3rd June 2020

Closure until further notice

Dear Families and Friends,

We realise it has been nearly twelve weeks since most of you have seen your loved ones living with us at the Hollies in person. We have therefore been trialling a visiting scheme using one of the new apartments whilst maintaining government guidelines on social distancing.

There is still no access to the Hollies main building for visitors, as we remain closed to all visitors. The new visiting is strictly limited to an appointment only system, after a phone call.

Valerie supported by the Activities team is contacting next of kin by phone and arranging these appointments. These are limited in time to fifteen minutes. Availability is appointment only after the phone call. Please do not phone the Hollies for an appointment to visit, please wait to be contacted. These visits we anticipate to be on a rolling programme, so that you may be able to see your loved one at least once every 4-5 weeks.

We are absolutely delighted that all our resident and staff Covid-19 tests came back as negative last week. We want to keep up the good work whilst allowing you to see your loved one face to face so please bear with us!

Having an ‘appointment’ to see your relative is so completely against our ethos of person-centred care, however safety is our primary objective for all including you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

To all our families and friends,

It was an absolute pleasure to work with the care team last week. They are amazing and all in good spirits.

One of our carers is expecting twin boys in August hot on the tail of another carer who had twin girls 10 weeks ago – we are still trying to find the chair they both sat in!

Sadly, on Thursday one of our much loved resident’s, a centenarian, died in her sleep. The Hollies staff came outside to line the drive and pay their respects as she left after living with us for many years.

On Saturday it was a beautiful sunny day and we took lots of residents outside to enjoy the sunshine and get a breath of fresh air. So many residents were excited about the VE Day Street Party on Sunday, but one resident lamented ‘I can’t go to a party with my hair looking like this……’. So, Sherry stepped in and took her to the hair salon and gave her a ‘Shampoo and Set’. She was delighted but word quickly spread and soon we were inundated with requests. Even the gentlemen joined in and it was lovely to see so many residents looking so well groomed and happy with the results of their visit to the ‘Vidal Sassoon @ The Hollies’ hair salon!

Photographs and an update from the Street Party to follow soon….

Thank you for the flowers, home made banner, doughnuts and other gifts to the staff – they are all so much appreciated. It is a privilege to care for your loved ones.

Keep on keeping safe!

To all the families

Following our Covid-19 update letter last week I would like to thank you all for your kind wishes and comments, and reassure you that all residents and staff remain well. I hope I have answered questions that were raised and that you understand that some details are confidential and cannot be disclosed. We are following government guidelines and remain in close contact with the multidisciplinary teams for additional support and guidance.

The staff are working hard to maintain moral and high standards of professional care during a time which is very stressful for them (as I know it is for you as well). The residents are enjoying the opportunity to venture outside and were able to enjoy some sunshine over the Easter weekend,  including the newly completed roof garden area. Please continue using the Skype communication that Activities can organise.

We strive to keep your loved ones safe during this time, and would ask you, yourselves, to adhere to the government guidelines by staying at home, only undertaking  your allocated times away from home. The grounds of The Hollies are used by the residents as their opportunity to get out and enjoy some fresh air, hopefully more frequently as the weather gets warmer. It is their space, and their only chance to get outside at the moment.  When visitors arrive to drop of parcels etc, no matter how well meaning, they are inevitably presenting a risk of cross infection.  I know that it is painful and hard, but please, please resist the temptation to arrive at The Hollies. You have all been brilliant so far, and just a few more painful weeks will hopefully pull us (residents and staff) safely through this horrible pandemic. We are trying to keep this situation under control but can only do this with your help and collaboration.

If your loved ones need any essential items from you, we will contact you and organise where you drop the item off (e.g. at the bottom of the drive).

This week the Government will make further recommendations concerning the lockdown as they have to do this every twenty-one days. The consensus is at present that nothing will change. The Hollies will remain closed until further notice.

Thank you again for your thoughts and wishes, and together we will pull through.

Closure until 12th April

Dear All Family and Friends

During this time, we are very mindful that lots of families maybe struggling with the lack of contact with loved ones. To keep the lines of communication as open as possible, we have set up a Skype access forum through activities.

Please feel free to email or call me to arrange a 10-minute time slot. Activities@thehollies.co.uk or call 07494408798

The residents are being kept very busy, with lots of in-house stimulating activities (including a staff pantomime).

All the best and stay safe.

18th March 2020

Closure until 12th April

A Head of Department Meeting was held on Tuesday 17th March 2020.

With the recent guidelines from the government, concerning the over 70’s we at the Hollies have made the decision, and appreciate all the support we are receiving from the relatives, residents and staff, that we will remain closed to all visitors, as a proactive precaution, until 12th April 2020. We will then be reviewing the situation.

Thank you for all the support we are receiving from all families during this difficult time for us all.

Residents remain well and we are doing every thing to make this time as easy as possible and safe.

Thank you

Continued closure

We would like to thank all residents, families and friends for their continued support in ensuring the best care for all here at the Hollies.

I can confirm that we are all well and no cases of the Coronavirus have been reported.

With Mothering Sunday approaching we will need to maintain our closure for visitation which will also include the delivery of flowers and other goods. Cards received through the post will be fine and very happily delivered.

Please could we ask for you to refrain from deliveries of any non essential items at this time so that we can focus our attention on the important care of the residents and protect the home.

Lorna, our Activities Manager is in the process of setting up Skype and will be in contact with families to book time slots. This will enable a great way to communicate with residents.

We will be posting daily updates to keep you informed.

Thank you

Closure of The Hollies 12th March 2020

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our residents, families and visitors during this difficult time in your understanding with the decision I have had to make this morning.

Due to the outbreak of two cases of The Coronavirus in the local surrounding area to The Hollies, as a precaution to protect our residents and your loved ones, I have taken the decision to close The Hollies to outside visitors to the home from 2pm today 12th March 2020, until further notice.

I will assess the situation on a day to day basis and thank you for your consideration in this matter.

We at The Hollies are all well and no cases of the virus have been reported, this is a proactive precaution.

Please feel free to telephone The Hollies for any information regarding your relative, but please understand that this is a very busy time for all of us.

I will add developments to the website as they occur.

Thank you
